The American Dream Vette Club is always looking for a reason to hit the road and explore.
As luck would have it, the Savoy Automobile Museum recently unveiled an exciting new exhibit at their beautiful Cartersville facility. The new exhibit features a dozen vehicles from the personal collection of legendary car designer Chip Foose.
This turned out to be the perfect excuse for this close-knit group to hit the road.
It was also another opportunity for Bud & Kim to show off their event-organizing skills. This talented duo led members of the Snellville-based club through a winding, backroad journey that ended at the Museum’s doorstep.
Pausing only for a quick bite at the Museum’s Cafe’, the club members then set out to survey the 100 or so vehicles meticulously displayed.
Legendary Chip Foose
We’re not ones to toss around terms like “legendary” casually, but in the case of Chip Foose, it’s not hyperbole. By age seven, Douglas “Chip” Foose was sketching and designing for his father’s business.
By the time he turned 34, Chip was bestowed a lifetime achievement award. Yes, you read that right.
At an age when most are just hitting their career stride, Chip was already inducted into the Hot Rod Hall of Fame for his lifetime of achievement.
To say Chip Foose has been a force of nature in the automotive space would be an understatement. Here are a few of his achievements.
- Ridler Award in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2015.
- Most Beautiful Roadster Award in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, and 2014.
- The Goodguys Street Rod of the Year Award in 1990, 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2010.
- Diecast Hall of Fame Inductee 2009.
- Best Hot Rod at Bilsport Performance Show 2011.
- Best Custom Car – 1954 Chevrolet “Cool Air” NACE Expo 2014
Chip’s Garage
They say you can learn a lot about someone just by peeking into their garage. That begs the question, “When you’re a Hall of Fame automotive designer, what do you drive when you want to go for a cruise?”
That was the first question on our mind, the second being, “What custom touches did he add to make these cars his own?”
Judging by the vehicles on display, Chip often favors vehicles manufactured more than half a century ago with “Foose style” enhancements throughout.
Those often subtle touches shine a spotlight on his unwavering attention to the smallest of details. After spending time with the collection, it’s easy to imagine Chip cruising down the boulevard in any of them.
The envelope-pushing Hemisfear is an obvious outlier as it was a limited production vehicle.

Rolling Works Of Art
Leave it to the Savoy Automotive Museum to deliver an exhibit as intriguing as “What’s In Chip’s Garage.” In recent months, they’ve hosted “Evolution of Bigfoot,” “Streamlined Elegance, The Tatra Tale,” and “Forged by Fuller.”
Each exhibit has brought a different aspect of the automotive space to this world-class facility. We’re glad we had a chance to tag along with the American Dream Vette Club on this excursion.
And once again, we’ll reiterate what we always say after visiting this stunning museum. The Savoy Automotive Museum should be a frequent stop for those who appreciate the beauty of rolling works of art.
