Dr. Martin Luther King Jr once said, “Life’s persistent and most urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”
Corvette Cruisers of Atlanta (CCA) sought to answer that question through their annual Father’s Day car show at Delmar Gardens Gwinnett Senior Living.
CCA has made this a reoccurring event on Delmar Gardens’ social calendar for over ten years. Judging by the club turnout, it’s a popular event.
It was a good feeling to be a part of a Corvette outing that brought smiles to the faces of so many.
During a break in the action, we sought out Shelina Esmail, Activity Director for Delmar Gardens, to learn more about this event.
Father’s Day Celebration
Rod Worley – Editor – The residents really enjoy looking at the Corvettes and talking to the owners. How long has CCA been coming to Delmar Gardens on Father’s Day weekend?
Is it part of a larger celebration?
Shelina Esmail – Activity Director – Delmar Gardens – We always put together a weekend of activities to celebrate Father’s Day.
We usually make a special breakfast the Friday before Father’s Day. The menu includes breakfast pizza, hash brown casserole, and French toast casserole.
My assistant, Madison, also bakes muffins. We have a big lunch buffet featuring prime rib on Father’s Day.
For many residents, the weekend’s highlight is the car show at our main entrance featuring Corvette Cruisers of Atlanta. For over ten years, this Corvette Club has brought smiles to our residents and lifted their spirits.
Full Range Of Services
Rod Worley – Editor – Can you tell us more about Delmar Gardens and the range of services you provide?
Shelina Esmail – Activity Director – Delmar Gardens – We’re a senior living community that offers a continuum of care. We have independent living, assisted living, memory care, and long-term and short-term rehabilitation services.
So as the needs of our residents change, they can stay here and move on to different levels of living.
We also provide a concierge level where it’s more than independent but less than assisted living.
A Family Feel
Rod Worley – Editor – You certainly have a beautiful facility here. Is there one aspect of Delmar Gardens that sets it apart?
Shelina Esmail – Activity Director – Delmar Gardens – Definitely, it is the staff and their commitment to the residents.
For example, our vice president has managed this property for 26 years. Several staff members have been here for 20 years or more.
I came here as a volunteer and fell in love with the place. That was 14 years ago.
It’s a community of staff and residents that look out for each other.
Many of the residents say they made “late-life” friends here at Delmar Gardens, which adds to the family feel.
Great Hospitality
At the end of the day, we’re not sure who got more out of this Father’s Day event, the residents or the CCA members. We do know the Delmar Gardens’ delicious lunch made us think about moving in.
Rounding out the fun was a drawing provided by CCA for Corvette-related gifts. Judging by the resident’s excitement, holding the winning ticket never goes out of style.
As the Corvettes rolled out of Delmar Gardens, perhaps the Corvette Cruisers of Atlanta members came a little closer to answering Dr. King’s question, “What are you doing for others?”
