One could argue whether Dan & Sue Black’s custom 2015 Z06 is quicker in the quarter-mile or in picking up car show awards. It does both very quickly.
Since he’s put the finishing touches on his LT-4 supercharged beast, he has been picking up first-place awards wherever he goes.
This stunning example of Bowling Green artistry in motion draws the admiration of show judges and true car aficionados at every stop of the car show circuit.
There’s more to this show stopper than just the eye-catching color. It’s the delicate harmony and masterful balance of the project as a whole that speaks to many. There is completeness here that you seldom see.
As Much “Go” As It Is “Show”
The heart and soul of any Corvette is performance. Dan has ensured his Z06’s thundering power on the street, matches its head-turning beauty on the show floor.
The engine has visited Redline Motorsports in Pompano Beach, Florida, for a Phase 2-C7Z performance package. This specially designed package includes a bevy of add-ons that work flawlessly together. The numbers moved from 650 hp / 650 lb/ft of torque LT4 engine up to 730 hp / 737 lb/ft of torque.
The upgrades included the following: 1-7/8″ Long Tube Stainless Steel Headers, High-Flow cats, and 3″ Mid-Section with X-pipe. Also added were an AT1-Redline drive belt, Haltech Stinger High Capacity Cold-Air Intake, Brisk Spark plugs, and custom E92 calibration.
This Z07 performance packaged Z06 is equally at home on the race track thanks to a custom-built roll bar painted in Velocity Yellow.
Paint & Finish Par Excellence
As a color, Velocity Yellow has been featured on Corvettes since the 2006 model year. Though we can’t ever recall one that pulled our gaze into it as deeply. When we found out the car had visited Al Bathurst of Shiny Fenders in Grayson, Georgia, it all made sense.
What Al from Shiny Fenders can do to a car’s paint is the stuff of legend in this part of the state. Al started with a paint correction process that removed surface imperfections and any orange peel.
Then he covered 65-percent of the car with Xpel Clear Bra material topped off with three coats of Gyeon ceramic coating. In addition to the car’s body panels, the glass windows, wheels, calipers, and trim received the Gyeon treatment. Show prep is a breeze now.
Jaw-Dropping Hood Liner
Easily the crowd’s favorite aspect of this trophy-winning C7 is the custom airbrushed hood liner. Dan turned to Steve Ray, an artist from Bowling Green, Kentucky to make a show-stopping statement.
Ray’s rendition of an American Bald Eagle is truly stunning. The attention to detail, especially in the eagle’s feathers, makes you forget its a fabric hood liner.
The use of color and composition leaves a lasting impression on everyone who sees it.
In keeping with the C7.R’s winning heritage, Dan installed an Anderson Composites rear diffuser to round out the appearance.
A “Car Fanatic” At Heart
Dan is a former President of Corvette Cruisers of Atlanta and a self-described “Car Fanatic” at heart. His passion for automobiles and especially classics, started at an early age.
He learned to drive in a 1928 Ford Model A and has been hooked ever since. While inclined mechanically, much of what he’s learned over the years has come through sheer determination, passion, and more than a few skinned knuckles.
Early on, he owned and restored four Chevy 3100 (1/2-ton) trucks built from 1947 to 1955. Later he bought a ’23 T-Bucket hot rod, a ’40 Buick Coupe, 1968 SS Camaro, and others before landing on his love of Corvettes.
What are the plans for this show-stopping 2015 Z06? Dan says he’s just going to drive the Vette, and let others enjoy it at car shows. One thing is for sure, there is nothing mellow about Dan & Sue’s Velocity Yellow Corvette.
