Progress is a good thing.
In years past, the only place a man could truly call his own was a dimly lit garage or a musty-smelling tool shed.
If you were lucky, you might have an old refrigerator for beer, but air conditioning or heat? Dream on fella.
But, still, it was something you could call your own. It was a “fortress of solitude” where you could hang your favorite sports memorabilia, twist a wrench, and unwind from the pressures of the day.
Today, many men have progressed to man caves inside the home with all the modern trappings. But as is often the case, not all of these are the same; some take it to the next level.
It’s that top-tier Corvette-themed man cave that we went in search of, and as Little Richard would say, “Good Golly, Miss Molly,” we found one.
Memorabilia Museum
We heard whispers from a shadowy friend of a friend who knew of one Corvette man cave to rule them all. But as the popular Lord of the Rings meme goes, “One does not simply” walk into this bastion of Corvette memorabilia.
Fortunately, passage was granted, and we stepped into an incredible world of all things Corvette.
Our expectation going into this was it would be a room or two with assorted Corvette-related paraphernalia. That notion was off by a country mile.
What we found were seven individually-themed rooms where each was more impressive than the last. It’s not an exaggeration to say that you could spend hours taking in all that this private memorabilia museum has to offer.
Decades Of Collecting
Rod Worley – Editor – The depth and breadth of your Corvette memorabilia collection is impressive. But how you’ve displayed it using vintage porcelain signage and car-related antiques brings it to life.
Can you tell us more about the collection and how long you’ve been adding to it?
Rod – Corvette Memorabilia Collector – I’ve invested decades into collecting Hot Wheels & die-cast Corvettes – over 1,000 of them, many in their original packaging or boxes.
Regarding collecting Corvette memorabilia, it started with wanting a couple of signs for the walls. And like most collections, it steadily grew into one themed room at a time from there.
As you can see from the walls, my wife, Dianne, got into Corvette puzzles. So we have about a dozen of them mounted on the walls.
I picked up several of the vintage signs during my travels before retiring. Also, over the years, we’ve picked up numerous driver-autographed posters and brochures from race tracks like Road Atlanta.
Plus, we were big fans of the Lakewood Antique Festival. We’d go there every month searching for memorabilia.
Gulf Gas Station Office
Rod Worley – Editor – Of all your themed rooms, my favorite has to be the historic Gulf gas station office. The authentic attention to detail is impressive everywhere you turn in that room.
What was your impetus for creating it?
Rod – Corvette Memorabilia Collector – When I was 16, I always got my gas from a nearby Gulf gas station. Back then, you didn’t pay at the pump; you went inside the office to pay for your gas.
I can still remember every detail of that office after all these years. So, when choosing a theme for this room, I knew I wanted to replicate that Gulf gas station office from my early years.
We already had some classic porcelain Gulf signage, and from there, we searched for merchandise from that decade to fill the front case. Then, over time, we found the cap, shirt, signage, and all the small details to make it authentic.
It’s always so much fun for us when we bring people through our collection and they step into this room for the first time. You can see their eyes light up as they remember this part of their early years.
Top Tier All The Way
With a keen attention to detail, Rod & Dianne have built a top-tier Corvette-inspired man cave. Though honestly, it is a better museum than some we’ve paid to walk through.
With roughly 12,000 carefully curated pieces divided among themed rooms, it is an authentic visual experience. To convey this collection properly, you would have to add several videos and a few dozen more photos to this article.
Even then, we’re not sure it would have the same impact as seeing it firsthand. One thing is for sure: we’ve come a long way from being relegated to a dimly lit garage & musty-smelling tool shed.
