Two things I know to be true about Atlanta. If you’re at the Varsity restaurant downtown, a “Naked dog walking with a bag of rags” is a plain hot dog and chips to go and the other? July is going to be hot.
Just how hot? The outside air temperature gauge of my Corvette Grand Sport read 100 degrees at the PoBoys car show in Canton, Georgia.
The strange part was I felt relieved because it read 103 degrees just before pulling in to the roped off parking lot. Clearly, it was cooling off, or at least that’s what I told myself.
Reasonably, you would have to think that given the recent COVID-19 problems, acres of blistering black asphalt, 100-degree air temp, and humidity that you could cut with a knife, not many would show up. Well, you would be wrong.
People in the Canton area love their PoBoys car shows.
PoBoys Brings The Show
Since the Spring of 1979, the PoBoys Car Club has been bringing car shows to this Canton, Georgia community. As most car clubs do, this club started as just a group of guys who loved old cars.
Today, the club hosts a cruise-in every third Saturday of the month from March to October. The Riverstone Shopping Center parking lot hosts the monthly event rain or shine.
This great group of members is about more than just showing off beautifully restored rides. They have a strong desire to help meet the needs of the local community, as well.
Through their fundraising, they have been able to donate over $110,000 to local charities since 2001.
Empower Cherokee
One of PoBoys charity endeavors is to Empower Cherokee. This non-profit empowers people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live life as they define it.
They do that through employment and social connections, and the support necessary for each person to achieve their hopes and dreams. Their office is at 133 Univeter Rd, Canton, GA 30114.
They are open Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm and can be reached by phone at (770) 345-5821 if you want more details.
PoBoys also raise money for Every Kid Deserves Christmas and other deserving local charities in need.
No Garage Queen Here
First impressions can be so deceiving. Case in point is Lynn and Greg’s beautiful 1959 Tuxedo Black Corvette. As I walked up to this sharp looking 59 roadster, my first thought was that it was another vintage “Garage Queen.”
It only took a few minutes of talking to this fun couple to realize just how wrong I was initially. Not only is it not a seldom driven “Garage Queen,” they actually hustle in the morning to get a chance to drive it.
As Lynn as was telling us, “We often drive this car to work, in fact, we try to beat each other out the door in the morning, because the first one out, takes the 59 to work.” Now there is a real incentive to be an early riser!
Hot, Fun & Well Run
The scorching July summer heat may have kept some people at home, but it didn’t damper this group’s enthusiasm a bit. The 150 or so cars that showed up were serious about having fun and enjoying the event.
Talking to club members, turn-out for this monthly cruise-in ranges from a couple of hundred to 300, 400, or more cars depending on the weather. In years past, it wasn’t uncommon to see 600 or more attend this event several times a year.
Definitely, for us, we had fun and enjoyed learning about this club’s support of local charities. We wouldn’t hesitate to put this event on our monthly calendar!
