In Atlanta, there was a time when Spring meant local Corvette clubs would soon start hosting car shows. So you could always count on a handful of fun Corvette gatherings every year in the metro area.
It was reminiscent of the swallow’s return to San Juan Capistrano in many ways. Both happened like clockwork every year, and the assumption was they always would.
Sadly that’s not the case for either.
Today, far fewer swallows return to the San Juan Mission, and Atlanta has far fewer Corvette car shows.
Fortunately, the Classic Glass Corvette Club of Marietta has answered the call for a yearly show for almost four decades. In recent years, the SuperVette Saturday event has represented the largest All-Corvette gathering in the Atlanta area.
To learn more about the upcoming 39th annual event happening on May 7th, 2022, at Day’s Chevrolet, we spoke with the event coordinator, Bob Catapano.
What follows is the edited transcript of our conversation.
Great Team Effort
Rod Worley – Editor – First off, Bob, let me say, “Thank You” for stepping up and being the SuperVette Saturday event coordinator for three years. You and your team have done a great job putting on a fun, well-organized event.
Especially given the uncertainty of the pandemic on top of all the other event headaches that generally occur. With that said, what kind of attendance did you have last year?
Bob Catapano – Event Coordinator – Thank you, Rod. We’re fortunate to have great event team members that work hard to keep it all running smoothly.
Last year we had over 260 Corvettes registered and over 800 people on the property through the day. We kept going back to the Day’s Chevrolet people to ask them to move the dealership cars to free up more space.
Rod Worley – Editor – You’re right. The turnout was strong. People were getting there early as well.
When we got to the dealership at 9 a.m. that Saturday, the place seemed to be filling up fast.
Bob Catapano – Event Coordinator – You know how car shows go. If the hosting club isn’t there blocking things off and setting up the registration area by 5:30 a.m., you’ll have people showing up and parking.
And it seems like its getting earlier every year. Last year, for instance, we had about 30 Corvettes there by 7 a.m.
It just shows how excited Corvette enthusiasts are to be a part of our event.
Separate Judges & People’s Choice
Rod Worley – Editor – One of the aspects that I enjoy about SuperVette Saturday is the grouping of the Corvettes by generation. It just makes sense on so many levels.
From an owner’s perspective, it’s great because you have something in common with the car beside you. That’s especially important if you have mechanical questions.
From a fan’s perspective, it’s also great because it gives you a chance to see all the cars of your favorite generation in one spot. So you no longer have to walk the entire parking lot searching for them.
Something else that made a real difference was in the car show judging. You had awards based on independent judges, and separately you also had awards based on people’s choice voting.
How did those two changes come about?
Bob Catapano – Event Coordinator – After the 2020 show, we reevaluated several aspects of the show, including parking and judging. The decision was made to group generations together for the reasons you mentioned.
Also, it’s easier to strike up a conversation and make a friend with generational parking.
Judging is always a hot issue. So that’s why we have two separate sets of awards, people’s choice and judged awards.
What’s important is that our independent judges are just that, independent. They’re not club members or affiliated with Classic Glass.
It’s more expensive and an organization headache to do both types of awards. But, in the end, it’s worth it.
You get the best of both worlds by doing separate people’s choice awards and independent judging awards.
