The United Service Organization (USO) is a vital lifeline to those serving our country in the military.
The USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home, and country throughout their service to the nation.
Having been stationed overseas, I know first-hand the difference the USO makes in the lives who serve. So, when we heard the Georgia Cool Cruisers was hosting their 10th Annual USO car show, we knew where our Grand Sport would be headed.
Apparently, we weren’t the only ones who got the memo because the event was packed wall-to-wall with a bevy of show cars.
Corvette Cruisers of Atlanta
Corvette Cruisers of Atlanta (CCA) has always been firmly committed to the local community and our country. So, it was no surprise when they rolled their caravan of head-turning Vettes into this event to support the USO.
Everyone watched as they parked en masse, but the real excitement started when they lifted their hoods. It was then you could see the individual creativity and attention to detail they brought to the show.
And, regarding car shows, circle 9/16/2023 on your calendar in red. This will be the date of CCA’s 11th annual “Corvettes & Camaros For A Cause.”
The C3 Church at 1065 Walther Blvd NW, Lawrenceville, Ga, 30043, hosts this event once more. From what we understand, it promises to be another must-attend event.
Ron Fellows Limited Edition
As spectators strolled among the Corvettes, they couldn’t be faulted for thinking this was just another Arctic White C6 Z06. Chevrolet is notorious for bringing out limited editions that are too subtle.
The 1990 ZR-1 comes to mind here.
But it was the commemorative red racing hash marks that caught our attention. For those who remember the glory days of ALMS GT1 Manufactures Racing, Ron Fellows was one of our most successful team drivers.
His name in the early 2000s became synonymous with winning races for Corvette. As a result, Chevrolet brought out this limited edition model to honor Ron’s long and distinguished career in 2007.
This Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Champion Corvette was the first signed special edition and the first Arctic White Z06 ever offered.
They produced 399, with approximately 300 delivered to the United States and 33 to Ron’s home country of Canada. Sixty-six found their way to other markets.
The price tag was $77,500 or $79,945 if you specified navigation and OnStar, the only two options. This edition set you back $7,500 more than the standard-fare Z06.
The Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 featured a hand-assembled 7.0L LS7 V-8 engine, which produces 505 HP at 6,300 RPM and 470 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 RPM.
Pavement-punishing power hits the asphalt through a 6-speed transmission with a short-throw shifter and limited-slip differential. All of this power rockets you down the track at 190-plus MPH.
The highlight of the interior is Ron Fellow’s signature and build number on the inside of the armrest, plus the unique red trim.
Did You Know?
Besides admiring Corvettes, we had a chance to talk with Pat Horvath from the USO. And, as you would imagine, Pat was a treasure trove of information on the United Service Organization.
For instance, did you know that since 1941, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve men and women in the U.S. military and their families? They provide support for military members throughout their time in uniform.
Surprisingly, we learned the USO is not part of the federal government. It is actually a congressionally chartered, private organization that depends on the generosity of individuals, groups, and corporations to support its activities.
They accomplish their ongoing mission through a global family of dedicated volunteers like Pat Horvath.
So it was only fitting this Memorial Day weekend that we to stood with Georgia Cool Cruisers to salute the USO, their impact, and their compassionate volunteers.
