Have you ever heard a few words of a conversation and had your mind jump to conclusions?
A group of us were standing around at a car show when I caught part of a conversation going on behind me. I thought I heard, “We’re going up in the mountains to look for an ugly dog.”
With this slice of information, my mind was off to the races. Questions like, “Who lost their dog in the mountains?” “I wonder if it had an implanted tracking chip?”
And, of course, “Who decided the dog was ugly?”
The truth was that Fred Fletcher, President of Lanier Corvettes Unlimited, was organizing a weekday club excursion to the Ugly Dog Pub in the North Carolina mountains.
Naturally, we asked to be a part of the adventure. Strangely, we also felt a sense of relief learning the imaginary dog was safe.
Signing Up For Fun
When you sign up for a Lanier Corvettes Unlimited (LCU) event, what you’re signing up for is fun. The event might be held at a road course, a drive to an under-the-radar restaurant, or a place of interest.
But regardless of the event destination, you’ve signed up for fun, and this club delivers. Recently, the club traveled to Camp Toccoa at Currahee to honor our first paratroopers from WWII.
Currahee was the early backdrop for the highly acclaimed HBO series Band of Brothers.
However, you could just as easily find LCU at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta or the National Corvette Museum. Their activities run the gamut from afternoon trips to overnighters.
If you’re interested, the club meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Carroll Daniel Construction Headquarters at 330 Main St SW, in Gainesville. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m.
Ugly Dog Public House
In case you’re wondering, there were no ugly dogs at the Ugly Dog Pub, at least not in the eyes of their owners.
If you love your pooch, this will be a slice of doggie heaven nestled high in the North Carolina mountains. As you might expect, your four-legged friend is welcome on the outdoor patio of the dog-friendly Ugly Dog Public House in Cashiers.
The pub offers cocktails, craft beer, wine, tasty bites, and daily dinner specials. Menu items include chicken wings, jalapeno macaroni bites, blackened shrimp, Caesar salad, Reuben sandwich with tater tots, to name a few.
You also have loaded hot dogs, bacon-pimento cheeseburger, pan-roasted salmon, and steak frites available. They have a multi-page dining & drink menu for you to choose from.
Just What The Doctor Ordered
Fred Fletcher, our event leader, knew what he was doing when he picked out this circuitous route. If you needed decompression beforehand, then this trek was just what the doctor ordered.
There’s a serenity that settles in your core while you’re carving up twisty mountain switchbacks. It’s a state of focus that quickens your heart while, at the same time, slowing down the world around you.
The intermingling of focus and exhilaration pushes the cares of this world off your radar. Bringing this visceral experience full circle is the sensation of pulling lateral Gs as the powerful small-block V8 sings in your ears.
Suffice it to say, the Corvette’s DNA is well suited to make the most of these exhilarating stretches of black asphalt.
Also, if you get a chance to ride with Lanier Corvettes Unlimited, you should jump at it.
