You can be a part of history on Friday, July 14th, 2023.
Georgia’s first annual National Collector Car Appreciation Day (NCCAD) cruise to celebrate the collector car hobby is happening soon.
We had more questions than answers when we first learned of the upcoming event. Though being hosted by the Georgia Street Road Association (GSRA) and Georgia Shefiffs’ Youth Homes meant it would be a quality event.
But besides that, we had nothing but the desire to know more and a hot tip of who to contact. So, one early morning over breakfast, we sat down with David Riser, event organizer & Vice President of GSRA, to learn more and feast on plate-sized pancakes.
We came away with one certainty after hearing David talk about this event. Years from now, you’ll want to brag to your friends about being at Georgia’s first NCCAD event.
Here’s what you need to know about the event.
The Start Of NCCAD
Rod Worley – Editor – Before we delve into your Friday, July 14th event, can you tell us more about the national event and how it came about?
David Riser – GSRA Vice President – The National Collector Car Appreciation Day (NCCAD) started in 2010 to celebrate the classics of the past and future.
Each year, the SEMA-supported Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus sponsor congressional legislation in the U.S. Congress to set this date aside.
Last year, the U.S. Senate passed Senate Resolution 690 (S. Res. 690), and in the U.S. House of Representatives, it was Resolution 1201 (H. Res. 1201).
The date marks the fourteenth consecutive commemoration in what is now an annual holiday to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection have in American society.
Georgia Congressman, Sanford D. Bishop, Jr., ranking member of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, is in the SEMA-supported caucus that initiated the resolution.
Since 1993 he has represented Georgia’s Second Congressional District which covers parts of Middle and Southwest Georgia.
First Annual Event
Rod Worley – Editor – David, what prompted you to organize an event in Georgia commemorating NCAAD?
David Riser – GSRA Vice President – Often at car club meetings, the conversation comes around to what’s happening to the collector car hobby.
You often hear comments like, “It’s not like it used to be,” or “How do we keep the car collector hobby going?”
So when I ran across the fact that there has been a National Collector Car Appreciation Day since 2010, I knew we needed to organize an event here in Georgia.
Surprisingly, car clubs in Georiga have yet to hold an event on that date. So, it was time for somebody to host it, and the perfect organization would be the Georgia Street Rod Association (GSRA).
The event’s premise is to bring out your collector car on July 14th and cruise with other enthusiasts to raise awareness for our hobby.
This first year, we will have a short cruise similar to the Hot Rod Power tour, where we caravan through small towns like Monroe, Social Circle, Covington, and McDonough, Georgia.
So we’re limiting it to 100 cars.
We’ll have lunch at 11:00 am at El Charro restaurant in Covington and then leave at 1 pm for a short cruise to the Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS).
We should arrive at AMS at 2:00 pm for a brief 30 to 45-minute closing ceremony.
